The Jurnal Kajian Bali (Journal of Bali Studies) is an area study journal that specializes in publishing research-based articles about Bali. The topics of articles about Bali that can be published are very diverse including Balinese culture, politics, music, language, architecture, literature, history, mass media, popular culture, tourism, economy, environment, health, law, management, religion, and Balinese customs. The journal would also like to publish articles on Bali with comparative approaches. The Jurnal Kajian Bali (Journal of Bali Studies) is published twice a year, every April and October. Published articles are reviewed in a single blinded manner. The Jurnal Kajian Bali (Journal of Bali Studies) was first published in April 2011 by the Center for Balinese Studies, University of Udayana. Starting from April 2019, the journal is published jointly by the Center for Balinese Studies and the Center of Excellence in Tourism, University of Udayana. However, starting April 2020, the Jurnal Kajian Bali (Journal of Bali Studies) was published by the Center for Cultural Research and the Center of Excellence in Tourism, University of Udayana. This change occurred because of the reorganization of research centers at Udayana University from the end of 2019.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the policy of distributing free laptops by the Badung Regency Government, Bali, to all 5th and 6th grade students at the public elementary school, but not to students at private school, in Badung Regency, Bali, since 2016 to develop basic education in the region. This topic is researched because it is a public policy development of basic education that was first implemented in Bali. The problem studied is how the response of stakeholders in the public elementary and private elementary schools to the policy. Data was obtained based on the results of interviews, document studies, and observations which were then analyzed by Hermeneutics theory and the Power of Knowledge. The analysis produced three conclusions. First, the policy was responded positively by supporters of the interests of public elementary schools. Second, the policy was responded to as a discriminatory policy by private elementary school stakeholders. Abstract

Yoga tourism in Bali has been running from the 1980s to the present day, initially created by overseas yoga teachers. In the 2000s, however, local Balinese yoga teachers began to emerge and compete with overseas yoga teachers. This article analyzes the ability of local yoga teachers to compete in the business of yoga tourism against foreign yoga teachers. The analysis focuses on the cultural capital owned by local yoga teachers and the role of that cultural capital in business competition of yoga tourism. Data was collected by literature study, non-participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and surveys. They were nalyzed by habitus theory and the product planning theory. This article concludes that the unique cultural capital possessed by Balinese yoga teachers is a provision for them to face competition in the yoga tourism business which eventually becomes a way for them to preserve that cultural capital.Keywords: yoga tourism, cultural capital, the uniqueness of Balinese yoga

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the perception of Hindu society on the existence of formal pasraman (Hindu style of education) in Bali. The research method used is namely the type of qualitative research. This research of descriptive data with primary and secondary data sources and the technique of determining informants using purposive sampling techniques. Methods of data collection using observation techniques, interviews, literature studies, and documentation, as well as using data analysis techniques and presentation techniques of data analysis results. The results showed that first, the background of the establishment of a formal pasraman include juridical background, religious, and needs. Second, the learning method uses is catur pramana learning method. Third, the perception of Hindu society on the existence of formal pasraman is still low due to a lack of understanding as a whole, therefore it is necessary to socialize the existence of formal pasraman.Keywords: perception, learning methods, catur pramana, formal Hindu pasraman

Abstract

This research aims to study the revitalization of quotidian ties as a medium of establishing social reharmonization between the Balinese Hindu diaspora and Sasak Moslem in Mataram city. This revitalization was carried out post-conflict between the two ethnic groups in a number of areas. This phenomenon is related to the representation of local wisdom as posessing noble values instilled by the ancestors of the two ethnic groups toward realizing mutualistic communication and interaction. This study was designed using an interpretative-descriptive approach in order to conduct an in-depth analysis of the research focus. This study found innovations relating to the implementation of quotidian ties, specifically through the revitalization of individual and collective consciousness based on quotidian ties, the strengthening of multicultural ties between the two ethnic communities, the valorization of local wisdom involving the participation of different ethnic groups, and the contestation of cultural capital in the implementation of adat and religious practices. Recommendations of this study are to build cultural awareness through attitudes that mutually recognize and accept differences.Keywords: revitalization, quotidian ties, Balinese Hindu, Sasak Moslem, social reharmonization

Abstract

This article examines how foreign tourists respond to authentic elements of Balinese culture displayed by hoteliers in Bali. It takes three international hotels as the object of study, namely the Nusa Dua Beach Resort and Spa Hotel, W Hotel Seminyak, and Four Seasons Resort in Ubud. These three hotels were chosen because they are international hotels located in three different tourist destinations, but all offer elements of Balinese culture as part of their services. The article discusses the problem of how tourists respond to elements of Balinese culture, especially architecture, food, art-culture and hospitality. This is qualitative research that draws on data collected through the technique of netnography in the form of tourist comments posted on Tripadvisor about services in the hotel where they stayed. Data were analyzed with response theory and interpretive content analysis theory. Analysis shows that tourists are attracted to authentic elements of Balinese culture. The article recommends that international hotels explicitly display elements of Balinese culture to support the image of Bali as a cultural tourism destination.Keywords: Balinese culture, architecture, Balinese food, netnography, hospitality

Abstract

In the last ten years there has been a new phenomenon in the implementation of traditional Balinese wedding ceremonies. This phenomenon in the simplication, the use of agents anda professional staff, so it is called ephemeralitation. This article discusses the forms of thought and the implication of ephemeralization in traditional Balinese wedding ceremonies. Data was collected by interviewing bride and groom, and professionals. Observation was done at Taman Bhuana Prakerti, Beng Village, Gianyar and Muncan Village, Karangasem and social media as wll. Documentations were collected in the form of photos of the ceremony implication and literature study in the form of books. The theory used was ephemeralization thery. As a result of the discussion, ephemeralization thought in Balinese Traditional wedding ceremony were initially rejected, but it was increasingly in demand, because it was more practical, efficient and economical. The form of ephemeralization was in the form of buying ceremonial means and using professional staff. This thought has some implications for reducing the time of ngayah (social service), so that it is more effective and the cost of marriage becoming cheaper.Keywords: ephemeralization, form of ritual, Balinese wedding ceremony

Abstract

This research aims to examine the representation of Balinese local wisdom in the daily life of Balinese transmigrants in Bolaang Mongondow Regency, North Sulawesi Regency. It also aims to analyse how the culture representation implicates the social interaction among the Bali diasporas with the local people and the transmigrants from other regions. This research using quantitative and qualitative approachs with questionnaire and interview as data collection instruments. The results shows that most of the local Balinese wisdom was still represented in the daily life of the Balinese transmigrant community in Bolaang Mongondow, except that the subak irrigation system and Balinese architecture were felt to be lacking.The interaction between Balinese transmigrants with local people and other transmigrants from other regions is very harmonious. It is caused the strengths of Balinese philosphies for instance Tri Hita Karana and Menyama Braya in the daily life of Balinese transmigrants in Bolaang Mongondow Regency, North Sulawesi Province.Keywords: representation, local wisdom, Balinese transmigrant, Bolaang Mongondow Regency

Abstract

This article analyses the phenomena of language related to the prescription of beauty from Balinese Traditional Manuscript (Lontar) entitled Lontar Indrani Sastra (Indrani Sastra Manuscript). The beauty of recipe in the Lontar Indrani Sastra is an ancestry cultural inheritance which has been already merged with the lives of the Balinese. Bali is famous because has conserved traditional manuscripts that become cultural heritage of the island. This article does not only apply the method of library research and field research but also descriptive qualitative method. The theory that is used to analyze the data is the theory of language functions. The function of beauty ecolexicon in the Lontar Indrani Sastra can be divided into three functions, namely (1) informative function, (2) interactive function, and (3) imaginative function. The informative function relates to various information about beauty prescription plants, body parts that can be treated and methods of treatment. Interactive functions are found through dialogue between Dewi Saci and Rukmini. Similarly, imaginative functions are discovered through the use of metaphors such as crocodile's calla (panggal buaya) and the Arjuna ecolexicons. Abstract

The Balinese who still maintain their cultural traditions are inseparable from the patriarchal culture with a patrilineal system which is clearly seen in married life that embraces the concept of purusa (men as a head of the family). Society is characterized by patriarchal culture which seems to dominate the position of men in decision making that raises the problem of domestic violence. This study analyzes psychological impact for those women who experienced domestic violence in patriarchal culture. This study used qualitative research with case study approach and the number of the respondents was three Balinesse women experiencing domestic violence. The data collected from interview and observation. This study concludes that patriarchal cultural became one of the causes of violence and psychological impacts that experienced by the three cases were feelings of fear, negative thoughts about themselves, feelings of worthlessness, feelings of depression, and release their anger to the child.Keywords: patriarchal culture, domestic violence, Balinesse family, psychological approach, Balinesse women

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the stakeholder’s roles and contributions in brand management of village tourisms in Bali and India. A descriptive qualitative research conducted in village tourisms in Bali, Indonesia with village tourisms in Andra Pradesh, India. In-depth interviews and discussions were conducted with twenty key informants involved in the management of the respective village tourisms. The findings are the stakeholders play an essential role in branding village tourisms to be able to build a good image of the destination. All activities offered in village tourisms indirectly become the brand of the village. This brand is expected to increase tourist visits, strengthen the image and keep the village tourisms sustainable. The brand of village tourisms is an important thing to be considered by visitors in selecting the destination, so every stakeholder must contribute to create good brand image.Keywords: roles, stakeholder, branding, village tourisms, image
